Drink Local Wine

With spring weather just around the corner (fingers crossed), what better way to spend a day than relaxing in the sunlight with beautiful scenery while sipping a glass of delicious wine? If this sounds like your type of enjoyment, Mount Nittany Winery in Centre Hall, PA is a must. Approximately a 15 minute scenic drive from campus, Mount Nittany Winery is an excellent way to spend an hour or two away from it all.

My friends and I participated in a tour and tasting. For $5, a detailed tour of the facilities is provided as well as a tasting of six wines and a logo etched wine glass. With a spiral staircase leading up to the tasting room after about a 30-45 minute tour, one is quick to appreciate views of a nearby pond, mountain range, and five acre vineyard. Personally, spending a beautiful afternoon here while supporting local business was a great use of my $5.

A bit about the winery, itself, the grounds opened for business in 1990 under Joe and Betty Carroll, who had previously been novice winemakers in the area. Much of the grapes are grown on-site and the barrels used are Pennsylvania Oak in order to further promote staying local. Any more information and I'll be giving away the tour!! :X  <--- my lips are sealed!

Unfortunately, the winery is not as fun if you are under 21. You can still tour and get a complimentary glass, but no tasting, which is a significant part, of course! So, my advice is: If you are over 21 years of age, Mount Nittany Winery is, if nothing else, an ideal way to spend part of an afternoon. Also, a great learning experience, knowledge of wine is a great conversation piece (You know... dry, semi-dry... tannins... chardoney, zinfindel -- do you know what all of these are??).

And last, but not least -Tailgate Red is a must-try!!
